Some background information on Pinterest SEO
Pinterest has had tremendous success with SEO growth over the years. Their post on Demystifying SEO with Experiments was especially motivating for me to launch RankScience, an SEO automation and A/B testing company.
So I’m always interested when I hear about programmatic SEO tactics that work on a site as large as Pinterest, which has 800 million+ pages indexed in Google. This is obviously a strategy they would never discuss publicly, so seeing it exposed and called out like this is fascinating.
So, how does this Pinterest SEO growth hack actually work?
A user uploads a photograph to Pinterest with no meta data.
Pinterest conducts a Google reverse image search for that image.
Pinterest scrapes all text captions for related photos found on Google.
On their own page, Pinterest publishes these text captions under What others are saying.
How to Make Use of Content Relevance to Rank Higher in Google?
In Google search, content relevance is an important ranking factor. It’s widely assumed that Google calculates relevance for individual URLs and pieces of content in relation to a specific query or keyword, and that these quantitative relevance calculations factor into its ranking algorithms.
In the Pinterest example, they take an image that Google already knows about and pull multiple text descriptions of that image from Google, then combine them in one place to provide one comprehensive page describing the image.
Because this corresponds exactly to Google’s existing understanding of that image, the page is likely to receive a very high content relevance score.
You can use an NLP method called TF-IDF to apply what Pinterest is doing to improve the rankings of content on your own site (term frequency-inverse document frequency).
This is a text analysis technique that determines the significance of a word or phrase in a corpus document (example: a collection of URLs). You can either do this manually with a spreadsheet or at scale with an advanced content optimisation tool like RS Content Insights.
Assume you wanted to rank high in Google for google image search seo. We already know which documents Google considers to be the most relevant and authoritative for this search term because they appear in search results.
So we can begin by downloading the top 25 Google image search seo URLs and performing tf-idf analysis across all of those documents to reveal key topic entities that are semantically related to the search term.

What is TF IDF SEO?
TF-IDF (term frequency — inverse document frequency) is a statistical measure usually used in information retrieval and text mining to evaluate how important a term is to a particular document in a collection of documents.
Does Google use TF IDF?
TF-IDF (short for “term frequency-inverse document frequency”) has long been used by Google to figure out the relevance of pages in its index to a given query. … This new tool uses the TF-IDF algorithm to help you optimize your pages for topical relevance, so that they rank higher up in search engine results.
How is TF IDF calculated?
The number of times a word appears in a document, divided by the total number of words in that document; the second term is the Inverse Document Frequency (IDF), computed as the logarithm of the number of the documents in the corpus divided by the number of documents where the specific term appears.
